Today we explored Dunedin. We hadn’t planned on coming to this city, but we were glad that we did. It is a university town so it has a lively feel about it and is situated on a peninsula at the base of hills.

It was very windy and sleeping in the campervan was chilly last night! We went to a quaint coffee shop to warm up and had the best cinnamon roll we have ever had. It was the perfect mix of cinnamon and sugar and it wasn't gooey at all.

Then we headed to the steepest street in the world as awarded by the Guinness Book of World Records. We didn’t attempt to drive the campervan up, but instead had a fabulous time walking up the street. It was very steep. Carolina was very afraid that she would roll back down the hill the higher we climbed. (Note the look on her face in some of the pictures.) Connor wanted me to videotape the entire walk up and he videotaped the entire walk down.

Then we headed to New Zealand’s only “castle”. It isn’t a true castle since it was built in the 1880’s, but the man who built it tried to make it look like one to impress his French heiress wife. It had a beautiful view of the harbor and pretty grounds.

Then we grabbed a quick sushi lunch before heading to Cadbury World for a chocolate factory tour. Unfortunately the factory was not in operation since it was Sunday so we had to settle for a short tour with some video explanations along the way. We did, however, get to watch one ton of chocolate get dumped from a pipe at the top of a silo into a giant vat below. It was pretty impressive. We also got to taste this melted chocolate and got a goody bag full of treats. We learned about a candy called Jaffas that are very popular here and can only be bought in Australia and NZ. I haven’t tasted them yet, but they are little chocolate balls coated in an orange flavoring. The guy at the coffee shop told Matt that they race Jaffas down Baldwin Street (the steepest street) in an annual race. Matt had no idea what Jaffas were then, but now we do. It started raining while we were at the factory so we headed to Queenstown. It was another brutal drive with wind, rain, snow, and hail. Matt did a great job driving. It is nice that we are timing the horrible weather with driving so we don’t have to be out and about in it, but it is makes driving way more stressful!
